Comparing Facebook and Twitter and Their Value for Library and Info. Science Professionals

The micro-blog twitter only gives you a certain amount of characters, so posts are shorter by design.  Because there is no limit to how many characters you can post on Facebook, people often write longer posts, sometimes writing multiple paragraphs. However, social media sites have changed over the years, and some are becoming more similar than ever in order to compete.  Both Facebook and Twitter allow people to post pictures, and both sites let users add links to outside sources, such as other websites, articles, and videos.  It is convenient, though, how sometimes you can post something on one social media site and allow that site to post the same information on other connected sites at the same time.  This is what my plan is for JBJewelz postings--save time and reach more people by posting the same information on multiple social media sites.

For library and information science professionals, these social networking sites can be very helpful for keeping up to date with what other professionals in your field are doing and what is going on in your field in general.  These sites also allow you to connect and network with professionals in your area of expertise and find people in your field with interests similar to your own.  For example, the IU School of Informatics & Computing at IUPUI on Facebook has posted information about the Grace Hopper Conference, a conference specifically for women in the field of computing.
